American congress has been warned how a newly-developed weapon from North Korea has the power to wipe out a vast proportion of the American population within a year.
This dark warning came from two members of the, now disbanded, congressional Electromagnetic Pulse (EMP) commission, speaking at a House Homeland Security subcommittee hearing entitled Empty Threat Or Serious Danger: Assessing North Korea’s Risk To The Homeland.
The EMP commission was a group of leading scientists, engineers, and security experts who worked together to understand threats posed to US civil and military infrastructure.
Funding has now been removed from the commission, in a motion which some experts regard to be a serious security risk.
I recommend reading fictional novel of effects of a rogue EMP attack, One Second After by William R. Forstchen to understand horrific scale

Former chairman Dr William R. Graham and former chief of staff Dr Peter Vincent Pry jointly asserted how a potential EMP attack could, ‘shut down the US electric power grid for an indefinite period, leading to the death within a year of up to 90 per cent of all Americans’.
The US government has so far paid more attention to North Korea’s testing of intercontinental ballistic missiles, which have indeed been cause for concern.
However, Dr Graham and Dr Pry argue the ‘biggest threat’ could well be a nuclear EMP attack, which they believe could lead to a ‘doomsday scenario’.
Concerns were raised in September this year after North Korea reportedly tested an underground hydrogen bomb. However, Dr Graham and Dr Pry argued the severity of such a threat remains ‘underestimated’.
While visiting an upgraded arms plant in Pyongyang, Kim Jong-un is reported by rt.com to have made the following worrying statement:
We managed to become a great nuclear power capable of defending the independence and national dignity of our homeland by mighty nuclear and hydrogen strikes
Although some have dismissed this as a hollow threat, Dr Graham and Dr Pry have given the following urgent recommendation to congress:
Address the EMP threat as a critical and existential issue, and give a high priority to assuring the leadership is engaged and the necessary steps are taken to protect the country from EMP.
The two former commission members pressed upon the hearing the importance of protecting the US electric power grid, while stressing how North Korea is currently developing hydrogen bombs ‘comparable to sophisticated US two-stage thermonuclear weapons’.
Dr Graham and Dr Pry presented the following statement before the committee:
After massive intelligence failures grossly underestimating North Korea’s long-range missile capabilities, number of nuclear weapons, warhead miniaturization, and proximity to an H-Bomb, the biggest North Korean threat to the U.S. remains unacknowledged—nuclear EMP attack
Writing last month in The Hill, Republican politician Curt Weldon described the decision to de-fund the EMP commission as "stupid", making a highly emotive case for the commission to be saved:
A nuclear EMP attack would destroy electronics everywhere, cause planes to crash, stop cars and rail traffic, blackout electric grids and other critical infrastructures that make modern civilization, and life itself, possible.
Eventually, millions would die from starvation, disease, and societal collapse.
My thoughts and fears no longer revolve around gun control. They revolve around ballistic rocket hydrogen bomb missiles. #trump

An EMP attack by NKorea would inflict devastating damage to the US, leading to the death of up to 90 percent of all Americans within a year.

The situation between the US and North Korea continues to unfold.
